"When I first stepped onto the yoga mat in 1999, I found what I had been searching for my entire life: A wonderful peace."

Actually, first I found I couldn't breathe correctly. So I learned how to breathe which was, interestingly, the first turning point in changing my life. I practiced vinyasa, ashtanga and the Forrest Method. I found that what I attained on the yoga mat I incorporated off the mat. This was point number two in changing the course of my life.

My first big influence was Paul Weitz, who not only taught me vinyasa like no other, but also fed me spiritual food for thought, giving me the yearning to travel further into what seemed at first like Alice in Wonderland.

My practice led to a holistic lifestyle. I practiced Macrobiotics and natural, whole foods cooking for the next two years, followed by Ayurveda, which has become my tandem practice to yoga and meditation. I left my work as a recruiter and started a domestic services company, offering non-toxic housecleaning and whole foods cooking.

Starting about 2002 for the next three years, I experienced a series of traumas and losses. These years would test not just my character, but also the effectiveness of the tools given me through yoga. These tools gave me the ability to take on these life challenges with grace and dignity. My practice gave me clarity and insight, and my trust in the Universe was taken to a new level.

Then I met teacher Scott (Sat Atma) Adelman, who introduced me to Kundalini Yoga and Meditation as taught by Yogi Bhajan. This gave me the power to direct my life in today's world and the tools to conquer my inner world. I had found my calling… to impart the teachings of this amazing technology and contribute to the healing and betterment of the lives of others through these teachings.

My name

My spiritual name, Savitree Kaur, was given to me by Nirinjan Kaur Khalsa, Chief of Staff of 3HO.org, which was created by Yogi Bhajan. Nirinjan Kaur was trained by Yogi Bhajan in the method of determining each individual's spiritual name. Our spiritual name is our destiny. As I am called by my name, I am reminded of why I am here.

Savitree Kaur means the Princess/Lioness of God who dwells in a state of divine consciousness, who is a Goddess of wisdom and knowledge, and who walks with grace and power throughout her life.

Savitree means: Goddess of wisdom and knowledge.
Kaur means: the Princess/Lioness of God who walks with grace and power throughout her life. Kaur is a name that is given to all women. Yogi Bhajan taught that every woman has the potential to attain a great state of grace and power, and he encouraged each woman to manifest that potential.

One comment that Yogi Bhajan made about the name Savitree Kaur is that 'one who toils on the soil is the one who learns the most.' Of course, I did not take this as good news.
M.S.S. Nirinjan Kaur Khalsa elaborates “that even though you have the energy of a Goddess, you do not remove yourself from the daily workings of this world. You work on the ground level, and in this way you learn the most about how to elevate yourself and others through your love of wisdom and knowledge.”
